A 9-11 Memorial was held at Grace Community Church Seal Beach to remember, reflect and mourn those that lost their life just 10 years ago. The event was well attended by Police, Fire, City officials and the public and was thoughtfully planned by Vicki Barilla and Pastor Don Shoemaker of Grace Community Church.
The ceremony began at sun down with music followed by a flag procession accompanied by bag pipes and was quite emotional for many in the audience. The choir led the attendees in singing several patriotic songs which got everyone involved and waving their small American flags. It was great to see so many from the Seal Beach community of varying faith’s come together in one location for a single purpose. Grace Church did a great job of keeping the focus on the remembrance and not religion.
Former Seal Beach Police Chief, Jeff Kirkpatrick shared his visit of ground zero shortly after the towers fell and again five years later. His slide show brought back painful memories as he recounted his first hand experience and share his own emotional journey with the audience. The 9-11 Memorial held at Grace Community church accomplished remembrance, grieving, sharing and celebrating life in a brief 75 minutes concluded by a candle light vigil which appeared to be a very healing experience.
Many thanks to Vicki Barilla, Pastor Don Shoemaker and the many church volunteers that worked so hard to make this Memorial a meaningful success for the community of Seal Beach.
