Some areas in the United States celebrate fall with displays of colorful fall leaves, here in So Cal we welcome fall with the construction of the Seal Beach sand berm. Every year it seems that the contractor adds a little tweak or hook to better protect the homes then the year before.
That’s probably most obvious after the breach of last years Seal Beach sand berm at the end closest to the naval jetty. Though some of the heaviest surf bounces off of the naval jetty, the waves that are produced find their way ashore between Dolphin and 13th street. This left the low sloping area of the berm nearest the naval base as the path of least resistance for waves that changed direction during the storm.
With lessons learned from the scramble that ensued to repair the breach, the earth movers and bulldozer set out to build the Seal Beach sand berm bigger, better and higher. From the pier it appears as though kids are playing with Tonka toys in a giant sand box working tirelessly to impress a parent.
Considering the annual cost to construct the protective berm is in the six figure range, the watchful eye will be more scrutinizing then any parent. If you have lived in Seal Beach long enough you’ll recall the amount of damage that can be done to the beach front homes if the berm fails. Only time and mother nature will decide of this years creation will stand the best they can throw at it.
