Few things define Seal Beach better than sandcastles and children’s laughter at the beach. Having grown up in town, I have fond memories of the annual sandcastle contest held near the 8th Street beach parking lot. Sun on my face, warm sand beneath my feet and the feeling of amazement watching the giant sandcastle’s being built.
There has been some talk in the past few years about bringing back the sandcastle contest. Different variations have been discussed.
One variation is to have the contest be the closing event to the sandcastle class offered through the City’s recreation guide. Providing kids a way to show off their new skills in a less competitive environment.
Another variation comes from Sandcastle contest “purists”, who feel as though it should remain as it was originally with categories, professional teams and awards. A larger production event could mean a bigger draw to visitors and more revenue for local businesses. Local restaurants, retailers and hotels could offer specials making the event a must see family attraction.
Is it possible to bring back the sandcastle event in a way that suits both amateurs and professionals? I’m interested to know how you feel about bringing back this time honored contest? Leave your thoughts to this question in the comment section below.
