A rare but eerily reminiscent reverse 911 call went out to Seal Beach residents at 4:30 am PST today after the 8.9 magnitude earthquake rocked Japan. The tsunami warning issued to Seal Beach was part of a larger warning that was issued from Mexico up to Alaska in preparation for coastal flooding.
The Seal Beach lifeguards cleared their equipment off of the beach and students from the Los Alamitos surf school awoke to find their class canceled.
A ship docked at the Seal Beach Naval Weapons station exited the harbor as a precaution as curious onlookers and news crews awaited any significant rise in the water level. Large waves are not predicated, although local authorities reported there may be very strong tidal currents.
